The Government of Maharashtra on August 12, 2026, issued the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2026 to further amend the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
The following amendments have been stated:
• In rule 4 of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, in sub-rule (4) after the word "antecedents" the words "and working knowledge of Marathi language" shall be inserted.
• In rule 22 of the principal rules, for the marginal note the following marginal note shall be substituted, namely :-
"Additional rules for drivers of motor cabs fitted with electronic meters."
• In rule 24 of the principal rules, after sub-rule (3) the following sub-rules shall be inserted, namely :-
"(3A) An authorised driver of motor cab fitted with electronic meter shall have working knowledge of Marathi language :-
Provided that, where an authorised driver is found to not possess the knowledge specified in this sub-rule, the Licensing Authority shall issue a notice granting a period of one month to acquire such knowledge.
(3B) If the authorised driver fails to comply within the period specified in sub-rule (3A), the Licensing Authority may for reasons to be recorded in writing,-
(a) suspend authorisation on a driver's driving licence for a period not exceeding three months; and
(b) in case of continued non-compliance, revoke the authorisation on a driver's driving licence:
Provided that, the authorised driver is given a reasonable opportunity of being heard.
• In rule 78 of the principal rules, in sub-rule (2), after clause (c) the following clause shall be added, namely :-
"(d) that permit holder shall have working knowledge of Marathi Language."
• In rule 85 of the principal rules, to sub-rule (1), the following proviso shall be added, namely :-
"Provided that, in case of renewal of permit of motor cabs fitted with electronic meter, the permit holder shall have working knowledge of Marathi Language to the satisfaction of the Authority."
